Keira Knightley, 2006
British beauty Keira Knightley channeled old Hollywood in this fabulous taffeta silk gown by Vera Wang. That night, the 21-year-old actress was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Pride & Prejudice, and she told Wang she wanted something "dramatic and sexy." The designer definitely delivered with the body-skimming gown.

After the show, Knightley donated the beautiful size-two gown to Oxfam, with all proceeds going to the charity's work in East Africa. Wang supported the actress's decision to do so, and displayed the gown in her flagship store in the weeks prior to the bidding.

“This is such an amazing dress and I am really pleased to be able to donate it to Oxfam,” said Knightley. “I have seen the TV reports on the horrendous drought in East Africa and I know how desperate things have become, so I am happy to be able to do something to help.” The dress sold for $7,855 on eBay, going to a buyer in Chicago. It wasn't an easy win, though: 79 bidders vied for the couture frock.

The plum dress was custom-made, and had a single shoulder strap and full fishtail skirt. It was accessorized with a vintage Bulgari necklace, which amped up the drama.
