You can imagine, then, how nervous I was to know I'd be visiting not one but an entire team of doctors and health experts on a trip to experience the newly launched Turnberry Isle Miami Optimal Wellness Program. The plan: get a sampling of its four customizable packages tackling weight management, heart health, stress management, plus psychological, fitness and nutrition consultations. The result: a changed diet, glowing skin, a crazy tale to tell about getting my face injected with my own blood (story on that later), an abandonment of exercise for vanity and a newfound confidence in my future 50-year-old-self's health. Whew. Did I mention this took place over just four days?

Turnberry Isle, a luxe resort in Aventura, Florida, has everything you need for an escape: picture-perfect pools, world class golfing, unbelievable dining and, of course, ideal weather. The cherry on top is the wellness program, which was introduced by Dr. Ellen Lebow and Dr. Michael Brawn. The duo brought on a team of seven on-site physicians and experts to develop integrative programs targeting every major health concern.

(Source: Turnberry Isle Miami)

Wellness retreats have been steadily gaining popularity among health-minded folks looking for an alternative way to vacation. From Canyon Ranch in Arizona to Maya Tulum in Mexico, resorts are catching on to the demand for restorative, experiential packages. Turnberry Isle is unique in its marriage of scientific, medical resources with big-picture mental and physical wellness. You're not just doing yoga multiple times a day and having healthy meals provided (although you very well can at the resort), but rather running lab tests to dig deeper into your health history as well as opening your mind to alternative practices. You get clinical expertise with a spa environment.

What's most impressive is how highly individualized the Optimal Wellness Program is—there's no same itinerary for two people. "Everyone here is committed to customization," says Dr. Lebow. "Customization is what preventative medicine is about." It's rare that you'd ever get more than half an hour meeting during a doctor's visit, but these physicians were extremely personable, friendly and—even now a few weeks after visiting—available to talk more if ever I have questions.

You can pick from four main programs that range from four to eight-day stays starting at $6,500 (full resort amenities included): Weight Management, Bio-Identical Hormone Restoration, Stress Management and the Heart Health Executive Plan. Throughout my stay, I tried parts of all four and had takeaways that revealed the benefits of not just Turnberry Isle's program, but any wellness retreat. It's something everyone should try at least once.

There's a nonchalance toward health you get away with in your early 20s. This led me to trying procedures I had never even heard of before: a detoxifying lymphatic drainage therapy, a neurobiofeedback session for training the brain to optimize electrical activity, an IV cocktail session inserting powerful antioxidants and electrical acupuncture. If ever I was confused about anything, the experts all enthusiastically explained processes in an easy-to-understand manner.

Get unmatched attention from physicians

The most educational experiences for me, by far, were my hour-long talk with the nutritionist Staci Shacter and separate consultations with both Dr. Lebow and Dr. Braun. Referring to my blood samples, each doctor went through my reports line by line, noting any outstanding issues (for example, I am seriously deficient in Vitamin D, which doesn't come as a surprise—hello, holed-up New York City indoor lifestyle!). Unlike previous experiences I've had with doctors, they didn't just immediately tell me I need to take such and such medicine, instead opting for a holistic approach including talks about nutrition and exercise.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy aka Vampire Facial.
(Source: Kristina Rodulfo)

Gain tools to ensure your future health

"You're 22 years old, what am I going to do with you?" Dr. Ellen Lebow admitted these were her thoughts when she first saw my patient intake form. This sentiment was echoed by all seven experts I consulted during my stay. It's understandable since there's a nonchalance toward health you get away with in your early 20s. You can engage in bad habits and still look like you're in tip-top shape. Little did I know I'd discover things about my body that could turn very ugly down the line. As Dr. Braun discussed with me, healthcare in the US generally focuses on treating diseases as they're already diagnosed. As someone young going through all of these health treatments, the biggest takeaway I had was to have a focus on preventative measures. I shifted my mindset to think about what I can do now to make sure I won't be needing high-stakes treatments when I'm older.

I definitely came away with a new perspective on my future given the tools and data I gained at Turnberry. The most notable change? I exercise at least five times a week now, which isn't different from what I did before, but my approach has changed—instead of focusing on looking like a fitness model, I have made it a goal to gain control of my heart health and body composition (body fat percentage, especially). That alone has become a much more powerful motivator than a six-pack ever was.

Revamp not only your body, but also your mind

During a wellness retreat, you typically have time to really slow down and relax in a calm environment. Such was the case during the Optimal Wellness Program, since I could take advantage of spa treatments like massages and facials. Apart from those rejuvenating beauty treats, however, I had access to a behavioral coach, Joan E. Childs, who addressed broader topics such as stress and guided me through meditation. It's a practice I've since learned the importance of and actively try to implement every day—not enough people prioritize it!

(Source: Turnberry Isle Miami)

place yourself in an empowering environment

Along with science-backed feedback from doctors, this wellness retreat provided help in the food and fitness departments, too. I worked with a personal trainer who helped me navigate weight machines, addressed my long-unanswered questions about exercises and provided a new routine I could take home. There were also organic, healthy meals at the ready and educated providers there to chat about everything from why taking a wheatgrass shot does the body good to what to expect when attempting a detox diet. At Turnberry, the experts practiced what they preached. Everyone ate clean, whole food diets, toted water bottles around all day and carried an air of positivity. It's impossible not to transform into your best self in that kind of environment.

Find out more about Turnberry Isle's Optimal Wellness Program here.
Fri, 27 Mar 2015 08:02:47 -0700 http://www.stylebistro.com Ud9U9BSqEF- Kate Middleton Wears Pink at Her Last Engagement Before Maternity Leave (Source: Chris Jackson/Getty Images Europe)The Duchess looked radiant in a fuchsia Mulberry coat at her last outing before she welcomes her second child. In our attempts at encouraging spring to hurry up and get here, this past weekend we hit up Haven Spa in New York to try its new Flower Shower Body Scrub treatment. We couldn't get enough of the rose-scented scrub so we had to ask co-founder Gabrielle Ophals to create a DIY version so everyone can try at home. Get the details below.

Ingredients:

One half cup salt or sugar
Favorite oil such as almond, jojoba or avocado
Two drops of your favorite essential oil such as lavender, rose, rose geranium, linden or petitfleur
Two to three teaspoons crushed dried flowers

Directions:

Mix together one half cup of salt or sugar with just enough oil to moisten the salt/sugar. (Regarding oils, try almond, jojoba or avocado—Ophals doesn't recommend olive because "you'll smell like a salad!") Into this mixture, put a few drops of your favorite floral essential oils. (Tip from Ophals: less is more when it comes to essential oils.) You can also add a few teaspoons of crushed dried flowers for added scent and texture. Mix it all together and give yourself a good scrub while standing in the shower. Ophals recommends spending extra time—a good ten to 15 minutes—on rough areas like elbows and heels. Rinse off the scrub and gently blot your skin dry with a soft towel. Follow with your favorite moisturizer, preferably unscented or with a scent that's complementary to the scrub.

Benefits:

Not only will this scrub reveal fresh smooth skin, it also locks in moisture thanks to the oils. Almond, jojoba and avocado are all rich in vitamins and hydrating for the skin, while essential oils invigorate the senses.

(Source: Haven Spa)

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:25:21 -0700 http://www.stylebistro.com 1YoTusVYsoW Editor's Pick: PilyQ Swimwear

(Source: PilyQ)

Shopping for swimwear it not generally a fun endeavor. If that's a bit too daunting, consider your wardrobe: Could you sum up your style in a 60-second video? Bryce Dallas Howard recently tackled both by creating a movie trailer for Canon's Project Imagination, a contest inviting aspiring filmmakers to submit their own for the chance at a short film. With a full-length feature film, you need a significant storyline with a beginning, middle and end [as well as] complex character development, multiple adventures and then you have to make it all hang together in a 90 to 120-minute film—it's incredibly challenging. With this project, you only have 60 seconds to fill up, so it gives you the license to get creative. For a short trailer, you don't necessarily have to know how the characters ended up together, how this character got on the roof of that building or if something like this would really happen in such-and-such period. Because of that freedom, I wanted to try something I never would be able to do with a feature film. I knew I wanted to tell a love story inspired by my own family's love stories. I’ve always felt very sentimental about shoes—ever since I was a little girl. I will typically repair my shoes several times, get them re-soled and cleaned. I never want to let go of [them]. The wear and tear that I see with my shoes and the kinds of shoes I wear during different periods in my life in retrospect directly represent my own journey—perhaps more than anything else. I wanted to tell a love story that showed the passage of time and when I was day-dreaming about how I could do that, I happened to glance down at my own feet, where I was wearing a particularly worn pair of shoes I’ve had for over a decade and thought, ‘ah ha!’"

Do you have any additional items in your own wardrobe that are just as meaningful to your life story? "Well that's easy: my grandmother’s pearl necklace—with her high school ring and a ring my dad gave my mom when they were 21 as the pendant. It's my ultimate good luck charm. I bring it everywhere with me."

Bryce Dallas Howard as Fisher Willow in The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (Source: Constellation Entertainment)

I probably relate to my character in 'The Help' the absolute least, but I must say that she had great clothes."

–Bryce Dallas Howard

Which of the characters that you’ve portrayed throughout your career do you relate to the most? How about in terms of style? "I played a character named Fisher Willow in a Tennessee Williams film [The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond] that took place in the 1920s. She's bombastic and sticks out, but she’s also sensitive and self-aware. She's deeply flawed but brave and unapologetic. Her costumes reflected that as well. And the clothes from the time period were beautiful with so many ornate details. In fashion, the '20s represented a time of independence and freedom of expression for women. I probably relate to my character in The Help the absolute least, but I must say that she had great clothes—lots of florals and color-coordinating. Women in the 1960s had shape, and the clothes of that time accentuated that femininity so I felt great in all of my costumes. Any period film is a blast, costume-wise. In Jurassic World, I got the chance to wear beautiful delicate rose-gold jewelry by Jennifer Meyer. I love wearing her jewelry in my own life as well because without being fussy, her pieces look and feel so elegant, understated and personal. I have a Jennifer Meyer nameplate that was given to me as a gift with my husband’s name on one side and my children’s names on the other. I wear it everyday and people always ask me about it, and then I get to talk about my favorite subject: my family. In my next movie, Pete's Dragon, I play a park ranger in the early 1980s and I get to wear pretty much the sickest hat ever made. It has this really detailed, handmade, embossed-leather band. I absolutely am obsessed with it. I'm secretly hoping park ranger hats come back into style so I can wear it at the premiere—there's an easy way to get on the worst-dressed list!"

Source: Mark Davis/Getty Images North America

How has your sense of style evolved throughout your career? "The older I get, the more comfortable I am wearing pajamas whenever I want. Seriously, my advice to any woman, especially a young mother, is find a great set of pajamas and never let them go. It's about as essential as finding the right pair of sunglasses. My personal favorite is BedHead. They recently did a collaboration with Liberty that is gorgeous, and I love the cotton-stretch for comfort. J.Crew has very comfortable and classic flannel pajamas.

I’ve never felt comfortable looking like the ‘actress’ in the room."

–Bryce Dallas Howard

When I'm out of the house, I typically wear J.Crew or Banana Republic jeans; a T-shirt and cardigan or blazer from J.Crew; and TOMS or a pair of old, beat-up pale blue Chanel flats I adore—I bought them eight years ago and have had them re-soled three times. I try to avoid wearing too much black so I have a ton of navy in my closet. And I love wearing color, but I very rarely will go for a print during the day. I keep it basic on a day-to-day basis. When it comes to going out at night for dinner, my go-to is often Kate Spade. What I find so stylish about [her] clothes is that the cut is always classic, flattering and pretty while the colors and prints have a touch of unexpected flair. There is an inherent ladylike playfulness with Kate Spade that makes wearing her clothes an occasion unto themselves.

When it comes to the red carpet, I also try to keep it pretty easy. I’ve never felt comfortable looking like the ‘actress’ in the room. I like looks on the red carpet to have an understated quality, something effortless and timeless. Posing on a red carpet already feels so inherently awkward, so I gravitate towards clothing that makes me feel grounded, comfortable and like myself."

What is the key to a good movie trailer? "Beautiful imagery, mind-blowing music, a stellar concept [and] characters we fall in love with. If you have those things, you'll have a great trailer. Obviously, this is easier said than done, but I really don't think there's any kind of magic key—and my dad could certainly tell you that. He's made numerous films, and each one is a new kind of challenge. Like anything else, it takes hard work and a willingness to learn. If you want to make a trailer—and you absolutely should—workshop your idea with friends, show them your rough cut, get their feedback and then work to improve it. The art of filmmaking isn't as much about talent as it is about dedication."

Calling all aspiring filmmakers: For the chance to have your trailer turned into short film—starring The Hunger Games' Josh Hutcherson!—submit here. For inspiration, watch Howard's example, inspired by her grandparents' love story (and be sure to have tissues handy):

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 11:27:44 -0700 http://www.stylebistro.com 948wUTCu_5n Steal Her Look: Kate Davidson Hudson

(Source:

As frigid temps turn to transitional weather, it can be tough to know what to wear on days that may start chilly and end balmy.
