Why it Works: Helena Bonham Carter's Airport Flowerlady Look
Even Lady Gaga, who has practically reached deity status among the costume-as-clothing crowd, should not attempt Helena Bonham Carter's latest airport look. Only the queen of flowerlady-meets-neighborhood-witch sartorial, aka the better half to Tim Burton, could pull this off. Let us deconstruct the architecture of her ugly-cool magic.
What could be in Helena Bonham-Carter's carry-on? One of Tim Burton's fantastic little animated wonderlands? Or just another great hat? (Fame/Flynet)
The Accessories: Allowing a hint of that mind-of-its-own mane to peek out, Carter’s headwear nods to the family bestie, Mr. Johnny Depp, whose defacto setting is also fedora. She then tops off the look with Ray Ban Clubmasters, originally made popular by Malcolm X. That’s two giant male fashion references, and do you see her blinking?
The Dress: A grandma-friendly flower-patterned frock with a dowdy fit, Bonham-Carter’s dress ties low on the waist, hits mid-calf and is topped off with fuzzy gray ankle socks and black sneakers. This just might be the least flattering combination we can think of, and yet, we’re fairly convinced B-C is pulling it off. Okay maybe the shoes are one step too far. But still.
The Coat: Sure it’s black, but in typical Bonham-Carter fashion, nothing is that simple. There are ruffles. So many ruffles. Ruffles that have met, fallen in love, and given birth to more baby ruffles. This is a woman who has never uttered the words: Do you think it’s too much? And we applaud her for that.
The package: Bonham-Carter’s carry-on of choice is a simple brown parcel tied with a lovely pink ribbon. It's the sort of thing that makes the lucky First Class passenger sitting next to her feverish with curiosity about it’s contents.
