Why it Works: Ginnifer Goodwin

Ginnifer Goodwin is the rom-com queen of "overlooked friend" characters. She's made a living out of being the sweet but too-quirky-to-immediately-notice one. The one who always seems to border on annoying, but somehow, someway, flips it in an endearing direction.

Naturally we'd expect that in real life Ginnifer would be holed up in her apartment obsessing over whether her true love is going to call her/marry her best friend, but here she is: out in the world, arm-in-arm with her handsome (see left) boyfriend Josh Dallas and looking every bit the front-and-center ingenue. If she has hopes of maintaining her day job, she'd best keep this public display of leading ladyness to a minimum.
The Hair: It's short. It's so short it makes Demi Moore's hair in Ghost look like Rapunzel's. So short it makes Tom Cruise look tall. So short it makes Julianne Moore's hair look blond. If that makes sense. It takes a special mix of confidence, ears that don't stick out and a so-tiny-it's-barely-breath-outable nose to pull off such a crop, but Ginnifer nails it with gamine aplomb.
The Shades: Retro circular sunnies that are just large enough to alert the world that she's important, just angular enough to avoid looking like a cartoon character, and just small enough that they don't dwarf her petite everything else.
The Shirt: It's more of a Little House on the Prairie nightgown to be accurate, with its buttoned-up-to-there collar and its faded violet buds. The high-on-the-thigh length offers that flirty minidress mirage thing, underpinned by the realization that she is a good girl, and yes of course there is something under there—bloomers perhaps? It's frumpy in that way that hipsters love to do frumpy, and therefore cool.
The Purse: The most prim of accessories, a quilted Chanel chainstrap bag, adding that little bit of rich French girl sparkle.
