Why It Works: Katy Perry in Paris

Our sympathies, of course, go out to Mr. and Mrs. "Kissed a Girl" on the occasion of their marital separation, but we can’t help but notice that Katy Perry’s recent shopping outing to Parisian concept store L’Eclaireur saw her looking ever so  “divorcée chic.”

The hair: Yes, that is still a shock of cobalt you spy in Perry’s mane, but slicked back into a face-liftingly tight bun, the shade looks less teeny bopper experimental and more fashion forward refined—subtle even. Come to think of it, there is a little bit of Debbie Mazar to this ‘do, and while we never thought we’d go Mazar in this space, it’s happened, and we’re not sorry. Accented with an oversized, stylized take on wayfarer sunglasses, Perry’s vibe is Robert Palmer background singer gone lady who lunches.

The coat: A knee-length slate gray wool number, Perry’s buttonless coat strikes a Helmut Lang–approved minimal note, while offering a window on the neon excitement that is her yellow snakeskin print belted blouse.

For someone with a demonstrated weakness for cupcake bras and carousels-as-dresses, the sharply paired nature of the look is, well, kind of shocking. The boots might be a little workman for our taste, but it was raining, so we’ll allow it.

The necklace: Tribal and exotic in an “Oh this? I just stole it from the Antiquities wing of the Louvre” kind of way. We love the visual weight of the accessory, its graduated spectrum of silver shades and its interplay with Perry’s Indian-inspired earring menagerie. She may have danced on tabletops and took too many shots last Friday night, but Perry’s grown-up look this week leaves the teenage dream in the dust.
