What to Wear: To the Grocery Store

Chanel changed the Fashion Week game completely when it hosted its Fall 2014 collection show in a massive supermarket. The unlikely mix got us rethinking the way we approach grocery shopping: could the produce aisle really just be a runway in disguise?

Where we once relegated the underlings of our closet—sweatpants, old shirts, beat up sneakers—we now see another opportunity to take a cue from celebs such as Reese Witherspoon and Minka Kelly, and look put together even on this everyday errand. While Miranda Kerr may be comfortable at Whole Foods in stilettos, there's no need to get too glamorous. It's all about striking a balance between casual and stylish.

DL1961 Riley Boyfriend Jeans, $168, at Shopbop; BP Trolley Leather Ankle Booties, $99.95, at Nordstrom

Take a break from your super skinnies and put on some relaxed boyfriend jeans. They're equally comfortable and cute when cuffed. As for shoes, step away from the flip flops. Try a pair of low stacked-heel booties in a neutral color to match anything.

Nasty Gal Morocco Knit Cardi, $68, at Nasty Gal

It really doesn't matter what top you're wearing as long as you've got an eye-catching outer layer. A printed cardigan is a lot more interesting than a zip-up hoodie.

Kate Spade New York Gayla Sunglasses, $138, at Kate Spade New York; Marc by Marc Jacobs Preppy Nylon Natasha Mini Crossbody Bag, $178, at Nordstrom

Accessories make the outfit. You can be excused from a full face of makeup at the grocery store, especially when you've got pretty tortoiseshell shades to wear. As for a bag, it's best to have a crossbody style for hands-free shopping freedom.
