Bodysuits for Everyone! Taking Grammy Costumes to the Street

Much like runway haute couture, stage costumes can provide great fodder for style inspiration. And while some over-the-top ensembles aren't meant to translate literally from spotlight to street, many hot stage costume trends can easily be adapted for stylish everyday use. Last night at the Grammy Awards, for instance, both Beyonce and Pink sported glamorous, black, long sleeved bodysuits for their respective performances. While Bey's outfit may have not technically been a bodysuit, it sure looked like one for our inspiration purposes, and featured a corset-like bodice and shirt collar. Meanwhile, Pink's was all lace, both had super high-cut legs, sheer detailing, and naughty lingerie inspirations. (In fact, Bey was wearing a La Perla cage vest.)

Certainly, these two powerful ladies aren't the first pop stars to rock sexy, high fashion bodysuits onstage. Who could forget the trendsetting cone-shaped corset Madonna wore during her 1990 Blond Ambition tour––designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, no less? (In fact, as we reported, that very corset is featured in the museum exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, which continues through February 23 at the Brooklyn Museum before hitting London this April, and then Paris the following spring.)

If these powerful women can rock bodysuits, why can't we? While we'd probably opt to top off our bodysuit of choice with pants or a skirt to wear in the real workd (as opposed to onstage), a stylish bodysuit can be a great alternative to a slinky or form-fitting top. Though the bodysuit's full body coverage can make bathroom breaks a bit more interesting than usual, one worthwhile upside is the garment's foolproof, form-fitting silhouette. (Translation: no bunching at the waist from awkward tucks or poofs and puffs in the wrong places.)

Want to try this trend for yourself? ASOS and American Apparel both offer cool selections of long-sleeved bodysuits in all shapes, sizes, and styles. But first, check out more Beyonce and Pink interpretations, and let us know whose you prefer in our poll, below.
