Uniqlo's Alarm Clock App is Either Really Adorable or Really Annoying, Depending
Japanese fast-fashion retailer Uniqlo doesn't just make fantastic basics at incredible reasonably prices—the company also makes cute cat commercials, awesome collaborations, a great brand-new online shopping experience, and, uh, an alarm-clock app that'll sing to you in either English or Mandarin Chinese. Yup.
The free alarm clock app, called "Wake Up," is gorgeous and minimally-designed—see the graphics above. It lets you scan the earth and see what time it is in other parts of the world—plus, its alarm automatically includes a weather report. The wake-up music also changes depending on the weather. All in all, pretty slick and cute.
But here's the other shoe dropping: Along with the alarm, there is a singer. Yes. A voice will actually sing to you: "It's a cloooooudy day!" And, while the voice is saccharine-sweet, waking up to that voice every day would, well, probably make us want to throw our phone out the window.
As Co.Design puts it: "The catch is that the narrator is, for lack of a better term, completely intolerable. It’s like Emiliana Torrini has Tourette’s and is completely unable to contain herself from randomly singing that today is 'PART! lee! CLOUD! ee!'"
See for yourself:
