Selita EbanksWhen you were a little girl, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Oh my goodness, I definitely did not think I was going to be a model! I had many dreams—I was always performing in my mother’s living room as a kid—but as I grew up, I was going to be an entertainment lawyer and a writer. I even took classes at NYU Law. I was on the debate team. When I was 18, I interned at Spin and Vibe magazines to learn about journalism. But all that came to an end when I got my first modeling gig. I had to make a deal with my father: The year I make less money [modeling] than I made the year before, then I would have to go back to school. It’s been almost 10 years.
You’re a bit of a fashion chameleon. How do you describe your own personal style?
My personal style sometimes can be a bit confused. I love fashion so much so everything I see I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I wanna wear it, I wanna wear it!’ But of course, I always try to come to some common sense and realize that just because it looks good on the rack, does not mean it’s going to look good on me. I like to keep it young, sexy but always sophisticated, always mature. I’d rather dress my age. I’m not really into the trends, per se, just into fashion.
Who are your favorite designers?
On Victoria Beckham:
You know who else I’m in love with? Victoria Beckham. Her collection is amazing! But I discovered, while wearing two of her dresses from last season, they are made for women without a waistline. Literally! I wore a gray sheath dress with a black belt and a cutout on top. It was amazing, but I couldn’t breathe. I could hardly sit down. I don’t know if they sent me the ultimate sample size. I don’t know if they sent me Victoria Beckham’s own dress, but I’m pretty small and I’m like, I don’t know who can wear this dress and sit down properly. It really hurt, but I’ll do it for fashion. It was fabulous!
