Weekend Workout Trend: Krav Maga

This Israeli self-defense method, a martial arts technique used to train the Israeli military, is swiftly growing in popularity throughout the US, with celebrity fans like ballroom dancer Karina Smirnoff, who told us how much she loved the classes she took.

With studios in many major cities across the country, many taught by former Israeli soldiers, don't write it off as some lightweight Hollywood trend––on the contrary. Krav Maga is serious business. You learn how to actually fight, and therefore to potentially defend yourself in real situations; connect to your instincts and body, and in the process, have fun, get a cardio workout, and challenge yourself not only physically, but as with most martial arts, mentally as well.

(Bauer Griffin)more pics »Though the technique is known for its tough self-defense moves––including kicks, escapes, and pressure points––learning to deflect attack and avoid fighting is part of the training, according to the Krav Maga Institute's website, which also explains that modern Krav Maga incorporates "boxing, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, grappling, and street fighting." And though it's challenging, you certainly don't have to be some big tough guy to do it. Even small-framed men and women can learn to effectively master these moves, so give it a shot!
