Rethinking Brow Shaping With Plucking

If you’re craving a natural yet tapered look, it’s best to pluck.

New York-based brow master Joey Healy, who paid his dues working in cosmetic retail at Bloomingdale's and Bergdorf Goodman before tending to the arches of Kyra Sedgwick and Carole Radziwill, is just one of the many celeb beauty gurus endorsing the tweezer-led approach.

Waxing and threading both treat the hair on your brows like it grows in straight rows,” he adds. “And that’s just not the case.”

If you’d rather take the DIY path, Healy’s got some basic tips:

1.
SKIP THE MAGNIFYING MIRROR
“Mag mirrors don’t give you the whole picture,” reveals Healy. “I always say your brows are like a full Monet: you need to step back and see them together.”

2. LIGHTING, LIGHTING, LIGHTING
“Daylight is unequivocally the best,” Healy admits. “You really want to be able to focus on one hair at a time.”

3. DON'T RUSH!
“If you make a plan with your brows, take lots of time,” advises Healy. “Don’t tweeze right before dinner or as you’re going out the door.”

4. GET THE RIGHT TOOLS
Look for stainless steel and angled tips—“great for getting those baby hairs,” says Healy—when shopping for the perfect tweezer. Healy’s own version, the Elite Sculpting Tweezer ($35), keeps clients clean and groomed between shape-ups.
