Weekend Beauty Dare: Three DIY Egg-Based Treatments

But did you know those eggs you're planning on coating with pastel food coloring and leaving out for the Easter Bunny can do more than provide you with enough egg salad for lunch for a few weeks? Eggs are full of fats and proteins that are fantastic for both skin and hair. In honor of Easter weekend, we've rounded up three DIY beauty treatments using eggs from beauty gurus Alexis Wolfer and Michelle Phan to help you make this weekend an ultimate one for indulgences.

Wolfer, the creator of the beauty site The Beauty Bean, is all about creating beauty from the outside in. In her new book The Recipe For Radiance ($18.05), she serves up not only DIY beauty tips but also tasty recipes to fuel your body from the inside out. If you're still suffering from cold-weather dry skin and blemishes, Wolfer's hydrating and blemish-fighting facial mask from her new book will help ensure your skin is moisturized and exfoliated with the help of only two kitchen staples.

Ingredients:
One egg
One tablespoon raw honey

Steps:
Whisk the egg to fully combine the yolk and the white prior to mixing in with the honey. Once eggs are mixed, stir in with raw honey. Using a pastry brush, apply a thin layer of the mixture on to your face, neck and chest. (Keep away from your eyes, though!) Let the mask dry for 20 minutes to let pores fully tighten, to tone the skin, and to kill bacteria. Rinse off mask with warm water and pat skin dry.

Benefits:
Egg yolks contain fat, cholesterol and retinols, which are fantastic for reducing the appearance of acne scarring. They're also great for pimple-prone skin. Egg whites are also beneficial, as they are great for tightening pores. Honey is an excellent hydrator and antibacterial agent, which is a must for acne-ridden skin.

If fine lines and wrinkles are more your problem, Wolfer has a recipe for that too. This weekend after the Easter egg festivities have winded down and it's time to "crack open" some eggs, hold on to those shells. Wolfer shares her 15-minute eye treatment that removes the signs of aging, tired eyes.

Ingredients:
One egg white (or a leftover egg shell)

Steps:
Wipe your finger along the inside of an egg shell once it's been cracked. Dab a thick layer of the raw egg white under and around your eye area. Be careful to avoid the eyelid and actual eye. Let the egg white dry for 15 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water. Apply your favorite eye cream post drying. If you want a longer treatment, apply a very thin layer of the egg white around the eyes and leave on all day under makeup.

Benefits:
Egg whites have astringent properties, which tighten skin, reduce puffiness, and temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

But don't forget your hair! The fats and proteins in eggs can be natural nourishing agents for your locks too. The ultimate beauty DIY gal, Michelle Phan, has a recipe to moisturize your tresses with only avocados and eggs.

Ingredients:
½ avocado
One egg yolk

Steps:
Blend the avocado and egg yolk in a blender to create a mask-like consistency. Apply mixture to your hair from the bottom up to your scalp. Wrap hair in a shower cap and let mixture sit 15 to 20 minutes. (Perhaps apply the egg-white eye treatment while waiting?) Rinse out the mask in the shower, and then shampoo and condition hair as usual. Hair should feel soft and hydrated post-treatment. To get a deeper hair treatment, apply the mask in the shower after shampooing, so the heat of the water has time to open up the hair follicles. Cover hair with a shower cap, shower as normal, then rinse out and use conditioner.

Benefits:
Avocados are rich with fats, oils and biotins that are critical for hair nourishment and shine. Egg yolks also have lots of proteins, which are great for strengthening hair follicles.

So in between your Easter egg hunts and Cadbury Cream Egg indulgences, take some time to treat yourself to some egg-cellent (yeah, we went there) beauty projects this weekend.
