Weekend Beauty Dare: Try This Skin Brightening Avocado Mask

(Source: Thinkstock; Art by Tanya Leigh Washington)In case you haven't heard, it's finally the best time of year: avocado season! The vitamin B and omega 3 fatty acid-rich fruit is an excellent source of nutrients to help you feel great and keep your skin looking its best. Not only is a must-have for any summer salad, but it's a miracle ingredient in beauty products. But you don't need a cabinet full of avocado-based items; you can go directly to the source for your skincare needs. California-based dermatologist Dr. Michael Lin shares with us a skin-brightening avocado mask just in time for the three-day weekend.

Skin Brightening Avocado Mask

Ingredients:
One half ripe avocado (Choose one that has a dark green skin. It should be soft, but not squishy to the touch.)
One tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Steps:
Place the pitted avocado and lemon juice in a blender and blend until smooth. Apply an even layer of the mixture as a mask, avoiding the eye area. Let mask sit for 10 to 20 minutes and wash off with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Apply your favorite moisturizer and eye treatment post mask removal.

Benefits:
This nourishing mask is packed with vitamins A, E, C and essential fats, making it especially great for treating oily to combination skin types. Specifically, vitamin A helps the skin’s natural repair cycle and keeps signs of aging such as dull, sallow skin at bay. Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant that helps fight free-radical damage, caused by pollution and sun exposure. The vitamin C found in lemons helps naturally brighten and firm the skin and is great for regulating oily, acne-prone complexions. Finally, the essential fats found in avocados help strengthen the skin’s outer lipid layer and maintain elasticity.
