Oscar Fashion 2012: Off-the-Shoulder Gowns

It's official, the shoulders are fashion's latest sexy focal point. Not in the classic strapless dress sort of way, but in the "oops, did my strap just slip down my arm?" way.

Why do we love this look so much? Because the trend has an alluring carefree effect—a quiet, innocent, almost accidental come-hither charm. It's feminine with a naughty twist, a style even your boyfriend will love (but let's not pretend your fashion choices revolve around him).

A few of the most stunning red carpet Oscar gowns prove the point further: From Kate Mara's beaded blush gown (paired with her smoldering not-to-be-outdone by her sister stare) to Missi Pyle's mint confection in her eco-friendly chiffon number. The most classic look, however, was flaunted on Penelope Cruz in her Armani Privé masterpiece.
