"It's all about the hat,"
Nina Garcia tweeted from
Marc Jacobs' Fall 2012 show. No truer statement could be said of the collection.
Instantly, images of Pamela Anderson's legendary pink fluffy hat came to mind (and you thought Yigal Azrouël's
fur bombers were over-the-top). Oversize coats, perplexing layers, chunky buckled shoes and safety-pinned crocheted shawls formed Jacobs' extravagantly staged Wonderland. The models appeared to be playing Alice after falling down the rabbit hole, or rather, a little girl who stumbled in and out of her grandmother's closet.
The world renowned designer loves to play with proportions and consistently infuses a heavy dose of youthful whimsy in his collections. Those are just a couple of the many reasons we eagerly await his always-entertaining shows. And entertain it did, but aside from a few crisp black dresses that closed the fanciful presentation, it is hard to picture any of his clientele donning these extravagant designs. Except for
Elle Fanning—perhaps she has the girlish vigor to pull off one of these looks. Minus the hat. Let's leave those to Pam, please.
