Oday Shakar Fall 2011: Dark Romance with a Silver Lining
Looks from Oday Shakar's Fall 2011 collection
Sandra Bullock made Southern California designer Oday Shakar a household name when she accepted her Generation Award at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards in his exquisitely beaded mini LBD. With its long sleeves, boat neck and dramatic open back, Sandy's look was quintessential Shakar: a sophisticated yet provocative silhouette revved up with bigtime bling.
The 28-year-old designer doesn't like to brag, but we have seen our share of long-sleeved minis since. And why not? Like mom always said: Show one major body part, not all. Sexy is in the suggestion! So, it was little surprise to find this look among Shakar's Fall 2011 collection, presented in high style atop the Waldorf Astoria Towers during New York Fashion Week in February. Here was a paillette LBD similar to Sandy's with a sharp V back, and a gunmetal version with the plunge in the front.
Shakar, who launched his line in 2008, has quickly become a go-to for socialites and stars (think Audrina Patridge and Gabrielle Union) in need of contemporary evening couture. Alongside the minis were handmade gowns galore: a burgundy lace halter with a hearty sprinkling of beads; and a floor-length noir showstopper with flirty cap sleeves and a faux-wrap silhouette. Rendered predominantly in black and charcoal gray, Shakar call this collection his darkest yet.
But this season brought with it something new for day: A watercolor print jacquard skirt suit, with a sexy nipped waist, is just perfect for sipping martinis at the Bull and Bear.
But lest we keep rambling on, see the looks for yourself in our StyleBistro exclusive interview with Oday Shakar:
