Tribe Mentality: Donna Karan Spring 2012

. . .
Looks from Donna Karan Spring 2012 (ImaxTree)

In a season often blinded by unnatural neons and otherworldy digital prints, Donna Karan planted her feet on terra firma and took us back to our primitive roots. Not earthy, mind you, but primal. Or in her words: "Sexy, hot and vital."

And it was, too.

For Spring 2012, the Donna Karan woman proved herself again to be at once global, urban and louche in body-con jersey dresses with devil-may-care asymmetric straps and "tribal-tech" accessories incuding geometric bangles, hand-carved platform wedges and those necklaces!—hunky masses of Lucite and wood shards that took our breath away.

Inspired by her recent travels through Haiti, Karan looked to native artist Philippe Dodar to inform bold brushstroke prints that painted everything from Karlie Kloss' monokini to a structured strapless gown. Shades of fern, violet and citrus were vibrant but all natural.

Here even the evening looks felt uncannily modern and even, well, cool...as though we just slipped into a slinky sequined gown and said, "What, this ole thing?" But that's signature Karan—artful, effortless, confident. Yes, please.
