This DIY Glittery Manicure is Like a Party for Your Nails

This Glittery Manicure is Like a Party for Your Nails(Source: Deborah Lippmann, Paintbox)We already introduced you to Eleanor Langston, founder and CEO of NYC's new mani obsession, Paintbox, and now we've got a step-by-step guide to help you get one of the salon's coolest looks.

The "Weekend Update" is a glitter gradient mani conceived by Langston and Paintbox creative director Julie Kandalec, and is a nail design for those looking for a little pizazz without all the fuss. The combination of glitter and negative space is trendy and practical. "The look can truly function as an 'update'—you can layer this look over a fading-polish mani or flip the design to the cuticle side to camouflage a growing-out gel mani until you can make it to the salon," says manicurist Claire Beaudreault, who provided us with the details for this particular mani. See how Beaudreault created the look, below.

Tools:
Base coat
Glitter polish, such as Deborah Lippmann's Happy Birthday ($20), Floss Gloss' Stun ($8) or Essie's Hors D'Oeuvres ($9)
Topcoat
Orangewood sticks ($2, at amazon.com)
Nail cleanser, such as Sephora's Formula X Cleanse ($11). Alcohol or polish remover work in a pinch, too.

Steps:
1. Prep the nail by removing any polish, filing the nail, pushing back cuticles and cleansing with a nail cleanser, alcohol or polish remover.
2. Apply base coat and allow to dry.
3. Open glitter polish and remove about half the glitter from your brush by brushing it against the inner rim of the bottle.
4. There are two options here: 1) With a very light touch, brush the polish about halfway up the nail plate. 2) Brush from the tip of the nail to the center of the nail, "pulling" the brush toward the cuticle.
5. Dip the brush into the bottle, remove some glitter from the brush but not as much as last time. Apply the polish to the midpoint of the first layer or one quarter of the nail.
6. Dip the brush and use a more generous coat of polish. Apply to the tip of the nail, capping the edge.
7. Apply topcoat. Allow to dry!
