Victoria's Secret Decides Kate Upton Isn't 'Too Obvious' After All

The progression from swimsuit model to Victoria's Secret angel seems like a natural one, right? Like, if you look good in a bikini it's a safe to say that you can model lingerie, too.

But, when Kate Upton's career began to take off after she covered Sports Illustrated's February 2012 swimsuit issue, casting agent Sophia Neophitou, who handles Victoria's Secret's fashion show, was quick to distance the brand from Upton, calling her "too obvious" (whatever that means) and adding that VS "would never use her."

“She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy," Neophitou said in last year's now-infamous Times interview.

But — just 15 months later — how things have changed! The model covers the back of Victoria's Secret's latest catalogue, dressed in a black Body by Victoria bra, the New York Daily News reports.

Of course, the photo could be from Upton's 2011 Victoria's Secret shoot. (She appeared in the catalogue pre-Neophitou-ban.) The bra she's modeling is a style that's been around for a while, so it's possible VS recycled the shot.

But still, the fact that Upton is back in the Victoria's Secret catalogue, after such a long absence, could be the company's way of extending an olive branch. (And, maybe, laying the groundwork for Upton's eventual ascension to VS Angel.)

We wonder if Vogue's recent stamp of approval has anything to do with this.
