Rita Ora Masters the Art of Red Carpet Masculine Femininity

When clad in a whimsically over-the-top Marchesa frock, one can't pile on the makeup and rock a picture-perfect frou-frou 'do, too. The key to werking the red carpet is striking the perfect balance between all done up and just groomed enough. (Here's a helpful hint—it's usually 80-20.)

Rita Ora gets it. At the 2014 ELLE Style Awards, the sartorially savvy "How We Do" singer kept it mostly feminine in a lacy multi-tiered tulle ensemble cinched at the waist and a coy matte red smile. But here's where it gets really interesting: she added a few masculine tweaks, such as boyish brushed-up brows, small stud earrings, and—her primping pièce de résistance—effortless hair in the form of slicked-back strands slightly pumped up in the front. (Elvis would be so proud.)

Seeing as how most starlets would have opted for a messy updo or dialed up the drama with an oversize textured topknot, we can't help but applaud Ora for putting her own edgy yet elegant spin on it. Merely paring down her mane catapulted the look from regular and run-of-the-mill to a majorly memorable moment.
