Thandie Newton's cool style is a very modern interpretation of a 40s-inspired reverse roll. Instead of creating ultra-sleek tresses, she worked in her gorgeous natural curl. This is a great option for curly locks, or spirals can be added to straighter hair with a small-barreled curling iron.
To duplicate Thandie's look, begin by sectioning out a swath of hair approximately four inches along the front hairline and going back toward the crown about three inches. Next, you'll need a foam hair rat. Start by drawing the top section forward, finger-combing through curls to smooth them slightly and roll hair around the hair rat until you reach the front hairline.
Then, form the hair rat into a u-shape but turning ends toward the back of the head and add a few hair pins to secure it in place. Next, tightly pull back tresses along the temples and the back of the head, draw up and secure in a ponytail between the two bent ends of the hair rat. Push the curls into place so that they are incorporated into the center of the hair-covered rat and use a few bobby pins to keep everything in place.
