The Secrets to DIY-ing Kate Mara's Super-Slick Ponytail

If you think ponytails are best left to the gym, your couch, and bad hair days—Kate Mara begs the differ. Last night at the Deadfall premiere in Hollywood, the lovely actress proved just how powerful (and gorgeous!) a classic ponytail can look when styled right.
To give the ultra-sleek, sport-chic style a ladylike twist, Mara wore a bright chartreuse lace-embellished Jason Wu dress with T-strap peep-toe Brian Atwood sandals, and a luxe Mulberry bracelet.

Love the look? This pretty pony only needs two products, one elastic, and zero hot tools. Really, it's that simple! Here's how to get her super-sleek style at home:
Step 1: Starting with slightly damp hair, use a teasing comb with a structured pintail (like this $3.50 comb from SallyBeauty.com) to draw a sharp side part, making sure to keep the line straight. (Tip: Sharp parts are great for giving basic ponies a high-fashion edge.)
Step 2: Rub a dime-size amount of styling cream along each side of your part to enhance smoothness and shine. We're big fans of Frederic Fekkai's Brilliant Glossing Cream ($25 at Saks.com) because it not only gives locks an amazing satin finish, it also offers hold.

Step 3: Pull hair back with an elastic and loosely secure the ponytail about 2" down from the crown. If your hair is short or you have choppy layers, pin any stray strand down with bobby pins.
Step 4: To give your pony extra tousled texture, finish the look off with a spritz of salt spray, like Bumble & Bumble's Surf Spray ($24 at Sephora.com).
