Only 4 Fashion Companies Made This Year's 'Fortune' 100 Best Companies to Work For List

For 16 years, Fortune magazine has published an annual ranking of "100 Best Companies to Work For." This year's list includes the usual suspects—like Google, where employees get free candy, subsidized massages, use of a seven-acre sports complex, and perks such as on-site childcare—as well as non-profits such as Teach for America, where employees are afforded "ample paid time off for vacation, as well as for providing care for their family members."

Among the 2013 Fortune top-100 are, also, four fashion retail companies. Can you guess what they are? The answer might surprise you.

Coming in at number 31 is Zappos.com—which we visited back in June 2012 and, yes, everything you've heard about the company's creative work environment is true. The average Zappos buyer earns around $65,000, the average employee receives about 68 hours of professional training annually, and they're all working for visionary businessman Tony Hsieh who's committed $350 million of his own fortune to help develop downtown Las Vegas, where the company is relocating to from Henderson, this year.

At number 50 is Men's Wearhouse, which Fortune cites as offering "unusually good compensation and benefits for retail." The Texas-based company also offers fully-paid sabbaticals, subsidized gym memberships, and a diverse workplace—reporting that 53 percent of its employees are minorities.

Ringing in at lucky number 88 is Washington-based Nordstrom, where sales department managers make, on average, $52,585 and employees are encouraged to trust their own good instincts. "In lieu of a rule book, new employees at the luxury department store receive a note card that simply says, 'Our one rule: Use good judgment in all situations,'" Fortune explains. The company also offers on-site fitness facilities and on-the-job professional training.

Finally, at number 97 is Aeropostale, the New York apparel retailer which employs 21,850 people. Though the company's staff is, by and large, part-time—"part-timers at this clothing retailer outnumber full-timers by nearly 5 to 1," Fortune says—they still have management's ear "through teen advisory boards," according to the magazine. The company's employees are 73 percent female and 35 minorities and the average assistant store manager earns $33,513 a year.
