Pregnant Ladies Aren't Buying Maternity Clothes Anymore

If pregnant women who pass up the maternity section in favor of buying regular clothes in larger sizes or more forgiving cuts are a thing (and WWD says they are), then Kate Middleton must be their mascot.

The Duchess of Cambridge has worn exactly one maternity outfit (in public, anyway) since announcing her pregnancy — a polka dot Topshop dress.

But, for once, rather than sparking a trend, the royal is merely following one.

“We do not carry maternitywear anymore at Bloomingdale’s, but we have a young customer base — mothers who shop here regularly for maternity clothes,” Stephanie Solomon, the store’s fashion director, told WWD. Those young mothers buy up "Diane von Furstenberg silk jersey wrap dresses (one size bigger than usual), J Brand leggings (worn below the waist) and layers of Splendid T-shirts (they have a long torso)" Not to mention, Solomon added, “a great blazer...and borrowing your husband’s jeans and rolling up the hem.”

Marchesa
designer Georgina Chapman took a similar approach. “I tried to wear as many pieces from my current wardrobe as possible. Of course, I did make some new purchases, but they were all pieces that I could continue wearing post-pregnancy,” she said. “While I was at the office, I opted for ballet flats and sneakers, but for evening events I finished my look off with a great heel. I think it’s important to stay true to your personal style, even while your body is changing.”

While this way of dressing is definitely economical (Who wouldn't want to buy things they could wear all the time instead of dropping a few hundred, or thousand, dollars on maternity clothes they only felt 'meh' about?), not everyone can stay within the range of their usual size while they have a tiny human growing inside of them.

The article did mention that one corner of the maternitywear industry is booming — mass market online retail. Which makes total sense, because have you seen how cute some of the maternity looks from ASOS are?
