Fashion's Night Out Is Dead, Long Live Fashion's Night Out

Pour out your free, watered-down, Absolut-branded cocktail for Fashion's Night Out — Anna Wintour's boozy shopfest is no more!

WWD reports that FNO's sponsors — Vogue, the  Council of Fashion Designers of America, and NYC & Co. — have collectively decided to put the event on hiatus for a year in order to allow retailers to "focus their budgets on projects that are more in line with their specific objectives," rather than sink all of their money into, say, having Bethenney Frankel sing a round of celebrity karaoke, while shoppers stuff their faces with mini cupcakes and truffled grilled cheese cubes and sales associates try to keep shoplifting somewhat under control amidst all of the elbow-throwing. 

But, to backtrack for a minute, Fashion's Night Out wasn't supposed to be like this. When Anna Wintour proposed the idea in 2009 — the height of the recession — retailers signed up to extend their store hours and offer up a few free drinks and snacks in the hopes of boosting sales. Each year, the in-store events got more and more over the top — think celebrity guests, mixologists, free beauty treatments, food trucks, and complimentary psychic readings — until, we're assuming, the cost of throwing a FNO bash began to outweigh any extra business it might bring in. 

Fashion's Night Out will still take place in 19 other countries this September, although, the foreign FNOs seem to be much more low-key.
