Every working woman, and I say this with consideration that every woman is different, wants to emulate impeccable runway beauty looks and make them work in the office. With the Spring 2011 season in full swing, this season is by far the most trend-heavy Spring season we’ve had in a long time! With beauty looks that span from bold orange lips, deep berry glosses, dramatic eye shadow colors, and a prevalent return of 70’s hair that includes loose waves, center parts and bone straight hair you usually see in the Garnier Fructis commercials, there’s no shortage of options. But how do we take the drama out of shadows that are brighter than your headlights, or the intensity out of dramatic bold lips and make them appropriate for the work place? Lesson number one…
For any lipstick trend, especially bold tones such as this orange, you always want to make the shade as light as possible, which means no- absolutely none- multiple applications. Please don’t go around the lip too many times! Always keep it light and fun, and keep the rest of your makeup toned down, as this Milly by Michelle Smith model did.
Details such as the ever feminine flower in the hair can always be easily pulled off! Although a dramatic, big flower can work on a model on Marc Jacobs’ runway, it may not work so well for an Executive Assistant at a stuffy hedge fund firm. Try to find a small, subtle hair accessory, as Forever 21, H&M and Urban Outfitters has super cute and flirty options that could work in almost any regard.
While the sexy, tousled hair that was made popular by peace-loving ‘70’s hippies is sexy on the beach somewhere in the Hampton’s, its imperative that you look more polished when going to work. To create this dominant runway trend for the office, use a big barreled curling iron, and comb through the hair with a big teeth comb afterwards. I recommend using a hair serum or hair “polisher” to create a glossy, more sophisticated look.
The tricky part about really bold and eclectic eye shadow colors is that it is almost impossible to pull off for the office! Or is it? I am not very fond of the word impossible, as I believe there is a way around nearly every complicated situation, especially the not-so-complicated world of fashion. For this trend, you want to really stay away from any neon or super bright colors, as seen on the Christian Dior runway. An emerald green, powder blue or even a lavender purple would work well for the office, but please, no drama! Your face is your first point of contact, and you always want to maintain a professional, polished look.
