Gothic. Romantic. Whimsical. Those are some of the ways you could describe sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy's brand, Rodarte. What began as a collection of 16 dresses made in their home in Pasadena, California, in 2006, has steadily grown to become one of the most sought-after labels in the fashion industry.

The designer duo started their brand (it was named after their mother's maiden name) in their 20s — and with no formal training. Rodarte has since become a red carpet staple, with stars like Natalie Portman donning the label on the Oscars red carpet and Nicole Kidman wearing their designs at the Cannes Film Festival.

From winning the 2008 CFDA Swarovski Emerging Womenswear Designer award to creating the ballet costumes for the 2010 movie Black Swan, the talented duo have proven their brand isn't going anywhere. With an aesthetic that ranges from delicate and ultra-feminine to gothic-grunge, it's easy to understand the appeal of their eye-catching collections. Click through to see what we mean.
