This spring, when Tyra Banks unceremoniously dumped her three longtime co-hosts Nigel Barker, Miss J. Alexander, and Jay Manuel, we were worried we'd never see their pretty faces on television again. Well, turns out, at least one of them will be back on our small screens sooner rather than later—"noted photographer" Nigel Barker has just inked a deal with Oxygen to host Naomi Campbell's fashion reality show, The Face, which is set to debut next year.
Barker joins supermodels Karolina Kurkova, Coco Rocha, and Campbell herself on set. According to the announcement, the show will:
...feature three teams of models, each led by supermodel coaches... Throughout the series, the supermodel coaches will mentor these young hopefuls taking the lessons and skills they have learned and using them to guide their teams through challenges that accurately depict what it takes to have a career as a model and be the face of a brand. The winner of The Face will become the spokesperson and ambassador for a well-known brand of heretofore undisclosed category (beauty? fashion? who knows!).
This is all happy news right? Well, sure—for Barker and Campbell. Banks, however, might not be super-thrilled.
Campbell and Banks have been embroiled in an alternatingly passive-aggressive feud since the late-80s/early-90s. It all started when rumors started swirling that Campbell, one of the biggest supermodels of the time (and, well, all-time, really), refused to work with designers if the designers also employed Banks.
The two resolved their 20-year standoff in late-2005, when Campbell appeared on Banks' then-talk show and Banks confronted her about she-said/she-saids from the 90s.
"I know the person that I am and I'm not someone to go and give myself away and say that to anybody," Campbell said on air. "I've never said that in my life. But if that's what you remember, I accept that, but it doesn't sound like me.
"However I've affected you or you've felt that I've affected you, I take my responsibility," Campbell said. "I must say I'm very proud of you. You've been a powerful black woman. Please continue."
This latest announcement—of an ex-ANTM judge going to work with Campbell—might just be enough to reignite the supermodel showdown. Because even though Banks let Baker go—well, think about it this way: Even if you're the one dumping a longtime boyfriend, it doesn't mean you want to see him take up with your arch nemesis, right?
