Kate Middleton and Prince William
Now that she's about to become royalty,
Kate Middleton probably has her pick of the most decadent clothes the world has to offer. Yet the future Princess Catherine is making a concerted effort to look approachable and restrained in the current economic climate—by digging into her own closet for public appearances.
First, Kate donned a navy jersey dress by Issa at the engagement announcement. Then, for an engagement photoshoot with famed fashion photographer
Mario Testino, she chose a cream Reiss dress and a blouse by Whistles—both British high street stores. Now, at her most recent appearance, Kate wore a year-old, black-and-white Temperley dress from the 2009 fall collection.
In a way, Kate can be compared to
Michelle Obama, who has a penchant for mixing designer pieces with mainstream brands including J.Crew and H&M. Michelle's influence on the fashion industry can be quantified at around $2 billion per year. With Kate's Issa dress completely sold out and Reiss looking to reissue her cream frock, it looks like Kate may eventually have the same influence. In which case, perhaps the public won't be so upset about shelling out for the wedding.
