revealed it was teaming up with Target and 24 CFDA designers. JCPenney will unveil collaborations with
Marchesa,
William Rast, and
Betsey Johnson later this year. And today, eBay announced it will be collaborating with
Billy Reid,
Chris Benz, Fallon, Jonathan Adler,
Ruffian,
Steven Alan, and
Tibi on a holiday collection.
Have we finally reached a high-low designer collaboration saturation point?
"Designers realize that the retailers need unique product so they are much more open to doing that," retail and brand consultant Robert Burke
told
WWD. "Multitasking is something designers have gotten used to. I suspect you will be hearing things in the next few weeks."
The eBay collection will launch Novermber 12th and will comprise 40 gift-worthy items ranging in price from $50 to $100. No word yet on what the specific products will be, but we hear that they'll span a range of categories—from homewares to apparel to accessories.
What do you think about all these designer collaborations? On one hand, it's nice to be able to get a high-end designer's creation for a fraction of their usual brand pricepoint, but at the same time, do you think it dilutes the luxuriousness of a brand? Did you feel differently about
Missoni after its massive collaboration with Target, for example—or
Marni after its blow-out H&M collection?
