Jamie Chung Spills Her Style Secrets
The fashion icon and bonafide city girl dishes on how her wardrobe has evolved through the years.
If anyone knows about big-city living while maintaining a fresh, fashion-forward wardrobe, it’s Jamie Chung. The stylish star stepped into the limelight in 2004, when she was a cast member in Real World: San Diego and has since scored roles in movies such as Sucker Punch, Grown Ups, and The Hangover (parts 2 and 3). She can currently be seen as Mulan on ABC's Once Upon a Time.
Chung has also made a name for herself as a fashion icon thanks to her blog, What the Chung, which spotlights her styling skills and highly-coveted closet. The actress and blogger recently joined T.J. Maxx on a study to determine how fashion is not only used to express one’s best self but also how that evolves as women age. Here, she gives us her personal input:
How would you describe your personal style? "I would describe my style now as girly but refined. For example, I’m still a big fan of the color pink, and whenever I find a pink leather handbag or pink suede leather shoes, I can’t resist!"
How has growing up in San Francisco influenced your style? "San Francisco is made up of a hyper eclectic group of people, quite a colorful bunch, so there’s not a lot that will shock us. I think this allowed me to express my best self at any experimental stage without being judged or feeling out of place. It’s allowed me to stay true to who I am or what I’m feeling at the time."
How does your fashion sense differ when you're in your hometown compared to when you're in Los Angeles or New York City? "I’m usually hanging out in workout gear and sneakers; I stay pretty active while I’m in SF because there are so many great things to do outdoors. I’m also wearing a lot more layers—the weather can change on you pretty drastically. I suppose I’m more casual overall when I’m in SF."
What is your idea of an ideal day-to-night city outfit? "It’s all about the accessories. Transforming your outfit can be as simple as throwing on a statement necklace, switching out your handbag and putting on a pair of strappy heels. If you have the right dress on, the transformation should be a breeze."
What is the most notable way your style has evolved through the years? "My style has evolved over time but I have always stayed true to who I am, expressing my best self every step of the way through my fashion choices. I think my biggest transition, though, has been in recent years as I have started really focusing on quality pieces to show off my more refined self."
