Vanessa Hudgens Spills About Her Biggest Denim Disaster, Her Latest Movie, and More!

Vanessa Hudgens clearly has style, so when she revealed she was once a fashion victim, I was skeptical.

But yes, not even the Spring Breakers star could escape the bad denim trends of the early 2000s. I caught up with the 24-year-old actress at American Eagle's Rock Your Walk event held at the brand's flagship store in Times Square. There she chatted candy, pandas, and movies. But most importantly, she divulged her biggest denim disaster. (Turns out Vanessa and I have more in common that I thought.)

"The denim skirt. That was my sh**!" she said of her fashion faux-pas. "Like every day with off-the-shoulder t-shirts, with the leg warmers, and the sandals."

You remember that outfit from middle schools across America circa 2001, right?

"I felt great at the time but now looking back at it, I don't know what I was thinking. It's a no go," she said. "I mean it works if you're 13!"

Hudgens' style may have matured — and thank goodness — but she's still a lover of denim, adding that her go-to piece is "a simple skinny leg jean that is a little beat up and worn, so it doesn't look too new."

Exhibit A: Her spot-on look from last night:

She styled her skinnies with an American Eagle crop top, a safari shirt, deep lipstick (she prefers Stila's lip rouges, "They're really rich and don't come off!"), and a Panama hat.

"I don't go anywhere without a good hat!" she said, as I Insta'd her Stetson.

But it's not just her fashion tastes that have matured. The star's choice in movie roles has as well. Hudgens already appeared in the edgy Spring Breakers, and now she takes on a much darker part alongside Nicolas Cage and John Cusack in The Frozen Ground, a film based on a real-life Alaskan State Trooper who followed the murderous rampage of a serial killer. Yikes!

"It was really awesome to be able to base my character off of a real person because I didn't have to create it myself," she said. "I'm super, super proud of that movie. I've seen it like three times now, and I can't wait to watch it again. I just love it."

So after learning Hudgens' darkest fashion secret, her favorite candy (we both love Reese's peanut butter cups FYI), and her favorite YouTube video (it's of a panda sneezing — duh), things got a little deeper, and I learned that the young actress' ever-changing style relates to her philosophy on life. No for real!

"I just don't like staying stagnant," she said. "I think life is about evolving and constantly growing. Everything should be like that, whether it's fashion or your view on the world or your career. Go with the flow."
