SHADE ALERT: 'Wall Street Journal' Dubs Michelle Obama's Jason Wu Dress 'Proenza for Conway'

At last night's 2013 State of the Union Address at the US Capitol, First Lady Michelle Obama wore a black and burgundy sleeveless, empire-waist Jason Wu dress to see her husband, President Barack Obama, deliver the annual debrief to both the government and millions of Americans tuning in via television.

Despite the A-line knee-length dress being tasteful and understated—certainly fitting of a First Lady and no great sartorial leap or departure from Mrs. Obama's usual tailored-dressy aesthetic (though, no cardigan this time, yay!), the Wall Street Journal certainly seemed to have a problem with her pick—so much so that they found a way to underhandedly insult it, without, you know, just coming out and saying they hated it.

In its Speakeasy column, instead of tagging the dress with the correct designer name—Jason Wu, who also, coincidentally designed both the First Lady's inauguration gowns—writer Elva Ramirez tagged Michelle Obama's State of the Union dress "Proenza for Conway"—a snark on both Proenza Schouler and the First Lady. Luxury New York-based label Proenza Schouler is designed by Jack McCoullough and Lazaro Hernandez, is a favorite of celebrities including Kate Bosworth, Kirsten Dunst, and Leighton Meester, and years ago famously created one of the best-selling Target designer collaborations of all time. Conway is a very inexpensive discount clothing chain store based in New York.
