Atlantic City Journal — Day 3: The Club is Jumpin' Jumpin'

(Photo by Caitlin Miller/StyleBistro) The Pool After Dark was the place to be on Wednesday night!

After three days in AC, I think I'm starting to get used to it. Wake up, head down to the lobby for some Starbucks, and get greeted by the sounds of slot machines and the sight of men drinking at the bar. Seems normal for 9:30 a.m.

After working for a few hours from the comfort of my king-sized bed (I'm still really excited about this), I met Danica at the Tropicana for a tour of the establishment. Let's just say we both loved it there. The vibe was great and casual. Not stuffy or overtly obnoxious one bit!

I personally was on the hunt for cocktails during this tour, as I'm writing a cocktail and nightlife round up for our Atlantic City package (Stay tuned!). So, I was particularly interested in touring Tropicana's ever popular Boogie Nights.

This popular '70s and '80s dance club had a totally awesome retro vibe. From the huge dance floor to the enormous disco ball (Atlantic City's biggest), Boogie Nights looked awesome. I can't wait to head back there some time when it's in full swing.

I particularly want to go during a Cougars and Cubs event. Once a month, the club has an event where women 40+ and men 21-29 get in for free until 11 p.m. Oh to be a fly on the wall during that!

We also saw Cuba Libra, which offers salsa dancing (!)...

And the ever popular Providence night club. Apparently, Providence is poppin' on Thursdays. Perhaps we'll see what the fuss is about tonight...

After touring Tropicana, we headed over to the Borgata. In my opinion, it's not hard to see why Borgata is one of the top in AC.

It's simply gorgeous. Slick floors, beautiful detailing, crisp design. The design nerd in me freaked out. And the hotel/casino has so much entertainment to offer!

I was really loving Borgata!

After a successful day of touring two really nice places, Danica and I set out for snacks. We landed upon a delightful cafe in the Borgata, where I got a casino-themed treat.

So needless to say, I was happy.

We then tracked down Caitlin P. and Lindsay for a team dinner. We headed back over to the Tropicana to show the ladies what they missed during the day, oh yeah, and to eat at Hooters, duh.

And boy do we know how to eat:

The amount of fried food would normally be appalling, but it was just so good it doesn't even matter.

After attempting to make a dent in this food, we headed back to the Showboat, so we could 'get ready' for our big night out in AC.

The great people at Harrah's arranged for me to do a cocktail tasting and interview at the famous Pool After Dark. Now let me tell you, this place is legit. It's where Pauly D DJs!

So we put on our going out best, which consisted of ballet flats, loafers, a motorcycle jacket, and one pair of heels between three of us. Ok, so maybe we haven't quite mastered AC-style going out clothes.

We arrived at the Pool not knowing what to expect at all. For three New York gals, our clubbing experience was a little rusty.

But we got there and were warmly welcomed. We were immediately offered drinks, seated in a VIP booth (!) and prepped on the club. Now, I'm not an expert, but the Pool sounds like it's always busy.

We got there at 10 p.m. and watched the club go from sparse to jumpin' in only two hours. Just imagine if we had stayed late (in club time) and gone on a weekend.

Despite being at one of AC's hottest clubs, we were still editors hard at work. For research for my cocktail story, I spoke with an awesome bartender, Jon, who proceeded to give us a sampling of some of the tastiest and most requested cocktails from the daytime cocktail list at Harrah's.

After trying the Swedish Fish, Blue Lagoon, Tropical Delight, Sex in the Pool (also offered on the night menu) and a Watermelon Mojito, I found a winner.

The Tropical Delight takes the cake! It tasted almost banana and pineapple-y and not at all cocktail-y. Let's just say, it went down very smoothly.

We then proceeded to carry on with the night. Lindsay was doing research for a story involving the men of Atlantic City, so we got to find attractive men and send Lindsay out to interview them. Not a bad job.

But, let's just say that it turned out to be a tougher job than we thought. Here's just a sampling of the types of conversations that we encountered:

Man: "Do you like steak?"
Me: "No"
Man: "Oh, well she does!" (excitedly points to Lindsay)

Man: "Is that a hand?" (referring to Caitlin P.'s necklace)
Caitlin P.: "Yes"
Man: (turns to me) "Well, let's give that girl a hand!"

Man: "You girls don't look like you're having fun! Smile!"
Us: (awkward silence)

Oh yeah, and Lindsay got picked up twice. No, literally. She was physically removed from the ground. Is that a thing now?

Anyway, the club was highly entertaining, the cocktails were tasty, and I got to see people jump in the pool (that happens!). Take a look at some of the pics I snapped from the night:

And the whole time this song was playing through my head:

After the club, we headed to the famous Irish Pub for research for a piece for Caitlin P. This place is a total local spot that's been around forever. No, really. Since the real Boardwalk Empire times. It was around during Prohibition and had a trap door for quick getaways and to hide the stash!

As we sat there at the bar, surrounded by old pictures of boxers, ball players and other random people I'm sure were semi-famous in the 1920s, Simon and Garfunkel started to play, and I could have sworn we were in a movie...

Until tomorrow, AC!
